What’s Making you Tired at Work?

8.1 min read

Feeling lost, confused and tired at work? If this is an everyday situation, chances are there might be more to this problem than what meets the eye. Consulting a doctor might seem like an obvious solution; however, you might need to take care of some bad habits and see if a few subtle changes can work in your favor.

Why am I Always Tired?

  • Late-night digital activity: As tempting as it might seem to be, using Instagram, Facebook, and other social media apps on digital mediums just before sleeping can be an extremely challenging activity for you in the morning. A late-night digital activity can prevent your brain from releasing melatonin, a hormone that is needed for a relaxed sleep at night. If a game of solitaire or reading on the phone is what lulls you to sleep, then it's better to keep the phone 14 inches away from your face to reduce the emission, which is not good for your health at night.
  • Skipping breakfast: Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day; skipping breakfast might be one of the worst sins you commit against your body. Your body is like a machine, which uses food as fuel to function every day. By skipping breakfast, you tend to deprive your body of the necessary fuel to execute day to day functions in an appropriate manner.

While these might be the top 2 reasons which define why you feel tired always, there is another fundamental reason which should be looked at with regards to tiredness at work.

What Does Fatigue Feel Like?

Feeling fatigued, tired and exhausted all the time? Even though it is an invisible symptom, it can drain your body of all energy and put you in a no-work-no-play-zone.

However, fatigue as a symptom varies from person to person; the definition of fatigue might mean extreme exhaustion from physical activity for one person, while it might mean extreme tiredness due to sleep deprivation for another. Despite the varying definitions, there is no denying the fact that it can put a person in an uncomfortable situation, thereby sapping people of all will to do any work or perform any task.

What Causes Fatigue?

We just understood that there can be varying definitions of fatigue for different people. Some of the most common reasons include, but are not limited to:

  • Sleep deprivation: Exhaustion from overwork or sleep deprivation can cause severe fatigue, which might slow you down and cause you to daydream about your bed throughout the day. If you have insomnia or are just a victim of an overactive mind, either way, chances are you are not getting 7 to 8 hours of required sleep at night.
  • Anemia: Anaemia is yet another issue with women, which is caused by iron deficiency. Since red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body, it’s important to have the right amount of iron in the body for these cells to function as required. Men, as well as women, can suffer from anemia; however, women are more prone to this problem, due to heavy menstrual periods and pregnancy.
  • Depression: If you are feeling depressed at night, it’s quite obvious you will not be getting enough sleep, which in turn will leave you fatigued and tired at work. Seek medical attention at the earliest, so that depression does not get the better of you in the long run.

While fatigue is just one of the most common causes of being tired at work, being sleep deprived is yet another issue which most of us deal with. But what happens when you end up getting a lot of sleep? Can that affect you adversely too? Let’s find out.

Can Sleeping Too Much Make You Tired?

Every coin has two sides; just like sleep deprivation is an issue, oversleeping has its own impact on a person’s mental and physical health. While oversleeping will not make you feel tired, it can definitely lead to a series of other health problems, some of which include diabetes, obesity, headaches, back pain, depression, and heart diseases.

If you end up having any of these issues due to oversleeping, chances of your mind going into overdrive are high, causing you to worry about a lot of other things apart from fatigue.

Combating Fatigue and Adapting Healthier Mornings

  • Rule out health issues: The first and foremost point worth a mention in this regard is ruling out any health issues which might be causing tiredness and fatigue throughout the day. If you suspect any of the following problems, reach out to a medical expert immediately:
    • Diabetes.
    • Arthritis.
    • Sleep Apnea.
    • Thyroid.
    • Heart diseases.
  • Get moving: Sleep on time at night, and try to relax your mind before sleeping. Once you have had a good night’s sleep, exercise the next day, so that your mind is tired by the time it’s time to sleep again. A good example of exercise at work is using standing desks to your advantage. Did you know you can lose a ton of calories, by just standing for a few hours throughout the day? More or less all the health issues mentioned above can be kept at bay by simply standing for a few hours every day.
  • Shed the extra weight: If you are bordering obesity, it’s time to shed some extra weight and lose those extra pounds. Exercise might be a good way to do so, while you can even try and include some of your favorite sports if your schedule allows. Either way, it will never hurt to lose weight, as an active body is everyone’s first desire.
