How to Determine your Ideal Standing Desk Height

How to Determine your Ideal Standing Desk Height

Our workplace environment has undergone drastic changes in recent years. Open workspaces and inflatable balls used instead of chairs are becoming part of the office decor nowadays. Among such unique novelties, height-adjustable standing desks are becoming widely popular not just for its style and function, but also for the number of health advantages standing desks provides.

What is a Standing Desk?

A stand-up height desk is a piece of furniture allowing users to maintain a standing posture while they work. In fact, many men of letters, such as Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Nikolai Gogol, and Vladimir Nabokov, as well as some politicians (Thomas Jefferson and Winston Churchill, to name a few),  preferred this style of working at a desk. Today, there is a whole gamut of such desks ranging from simple DIY constructions (like placing your monitor on top of a stack of books) to more elaborate ones where the standing desk height is adjusted with the push of a button

Types of Standing Desks

If your skills don’t allow you to build such a table yourself, you can always browse the market where there are several types of standing desks available:

Fixed-height desks. These are designed for permanent standing usage and are just perfect for an office where employees gather around to work on some project or discuss an issue. However, if you work from home, there is a high probability that you will eventually feel the need for a sit-down desk to rest your weary legs. So you will have to find some room for both tables.

Fixed-height desktop add-ons. These are small tables to be placed on a desktop where you can position your laptop, keyboard or monitor. The advantage of this option is that it is affordable and easily removable. Yet the necessary prerequisite of acquiring it is a careful measurement of standing desk dimensions.

Sit-stand desks. At Progressive Desk, we offer a wide range of sit-stand desks where the height of the standing desk can be adjusted. This type is most functional since it can be used in all possible positions. Adjusting mechanisms may vary from the crank type (where you raise or lower it manually) to those powered by pneumatic lifts or linear actuators.

Adjustable-height desktop risers. This is a combination of the desk types mentioned above. Here an adjustable desk riser is fixed on your regular (non-adjustable) table, so the proper height for standing desk is provided by adjustable legs of the contraption or a swing-arm mechanism. It is a cheaper substitution for a full-size adjustable standing desk, but there is a downside to it, too. Such an add-on lessens the total desktop space so you may have to find room for your monitor and keyboard.

Advantages of Standing Desk

There is no doubt of the health benefits of using a standing desk, listing a few below:

Reduced risk of Obesity: According to recent research, employees who stand at their desks burn 50 calories per hour as compared to sedentary counterparts.

Reduced Risk of Cancer: We have all heard that "sitting is the new smoking," and according to researchers and scientists, prolonged sitting can cause breast, colon cancer, and other cancer types.

Improves Posture: By choosing the correct height for a standing desk and using your desk correctly will help keep your shoulders from hunching while you work.

Improves eyesight: Adjusting your standing desk monitor height (it should be just above eye level) will keep you from straining your eyes while you're working.

Choosing the Height of a Standing Desk

Standing Desk

There are several benefits to using a height-adjustable standing desk including not having to slouch or strain your back or your eyes anymore. But to be able to get the most of your standing desk it is important to understand how to measure the correct height of your desk and screen.

You must measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of your elbows when they are placed at a 90-degree angle from the floor. This is the best height for a standing desk.

Alternately, you can figure out the proper height of the standing desk depending on how tall you are. Here’s how to ensure you’re standing desk is at the right height:

  • Stand tall with your head raised towards the ceiling, with shoulders straight and your arms down.
  • Bend your elbows to form a 90-degree angle.
  • Raise the desk until your fingers make contact with the keyboard placed on it.
  • Make sure your eyes are level with the top third of the monitor and then fix the height of it.

    Important Tips to Consider

As you will be spending a few hours each day standing, you must also consider taking care of your legs and feet which may feel tired and sore after a while. An anti-fatigue mat is a perfect choice while using a sit-stand desk. Whether you plan to stand for 10minutes or for an hour continuously, a standing desk mat can offer the comfort your feet and legs require while standing thus making standing at your desk an effective experience.

It’s also important to start slow. The transition from a sitting to a standing desk should not be made at once. Begin with 15 minutes to half an hour standing at your desk and you can gradually increase the time once you get used to standing and working. Try not to stay in the same position (either standing or sitting) for long. Alternate between the two and don't forget about walking.
